Colorado State University (Colorado State or CSU) is a public land-grant research university in Fort Collins, Colorado. It is the flagship university of the Colorado State University System. Colorado State University is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". It was founded in 1870 as Colorado Agricultural College and in 1935 was renamed the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The Colorado State Rams compete in the NCAA Division I Mountain West Conference. Swimmer and six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken is one of CSU's most notable athletes.
